Welcome to Let’s Make Kids Books!
My name is Beau Blackwell, and I’m the author of several self-published children’s books. I started writing and self-publishing books for my own kids a few months ago, and quickly fell in love with the process.
All my life I’ve wanted to be an author. As a kid, I read constantly, and always dreamed of putting out my own books. I still hope to write novels someday, but as someone who is newly self-employed and has two small kids, making the time to write a full-length novel has been really tough.
I fell into writing kids books accidentally- a few months ago, my wife and I were struggling with getting our little boy to stay in bed at night, and I was buying every kids book I could find on Kindle about staying in bed and getting sleep. One morning after dropping our son off at daycare (probably after a sleepless night), I got an idea to write my own book.
It all kind of hit me out of the blue- I had the idea and started thinking of rhymes all while driving home. As soon as I got home, I sat down and wrote out what would become my first book, The Knight Who Wouldn’t Sleep.
It felt awesome to have a book written, but right away I started feeling overwhelmed by how to actually get it done. I started digging into everything I could find on self-publishing, but there wasn’t a whole lot out there that was specific to kids books, like working with illustrators and formatting image-heavy books.
After a couple of months of trial and error, I finally had my first book up for sale! Since then I’ve learned a lot and have streamlined the process a lot. My second book, Natasha the Ninja Princess, took me less than a month from start to publication. That’s one thing I love about self-publishing over traditional publishing- you can put new books out quickly, instead of having to wait on the publisher.
My goal with this site is to help you start writing and publishing your own children’s books like I’ve done. I’ve talked to so many people who say they’d love to write their own to read to their own kids or to share with the world, or who already have one written but have no clue how to publish it.
I’m here to tell you- it really is possible for you to be a self-published children’s book author! The technology available today makes it easier and more profitable than ever before to write, publish, and market your own kids books, and I’ll help you through the process.
The feeling of having your name on the cover of a book that’s for sale on Amazon or iBooks, and of reading your own book to your kids… it’s pretty fantastic. I want you to get to feel that too!
If you have questions, challenges, or topics you’d like me to cover on the site, please contact me and let me know! I’m looking forward to getting to know you and helping you get your books out there into the world.
